There are all kinds of nerds out there. Some are into technology and science, while others might be a little socially awkward or deeply passionate about subjects like theater, literature, history, or just about anything else.
At the end of the day, though, there’s plenty that nerdy people have in common. We gathered some funny memes from the Instagram page Tranqify that capture those shared experiences pretty well. Even if you wouldn’t necessarily call yourself a nerd, you might still find quite a few of them relatable.

When you picture a stereotypical nerd, what comes to mind?
Is it someone like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory or Maurice Moss from The IT Crowd? Maybe Velma from Scooby-Doo, with her thick glasses and love of solving mysteries? Basically, someone who is unusually smart, a little socially awkward, and incredibly passionate about their interests.
For decades, movies and TV shows have played with the idea of the brainy outsider who struggles to fit in. Still, the word itself has been around much longer than many of those characters. And its meaning has changed quite a bit along the way.

Plus, sometimes museums display sparkly trinkets to learn about! We had a Faberge exhibit a while back; I was mesmerized. There was a jeweled pickle, too. They called it a "gherkin."

The exact origin of “nerd” is actually difficult to pin down. Merriam-Webster notes that there are several theories, with one of the earliest known appearances in print coming from Dr. Seuss.
In his 1950 book If I Ran the Zoo, a strange creature called a Nerd appears alongside several other made-up animals. Whether that is where the word we use today really came from is unclear, but the timing certainly makes the theory interesting.

I'm wanting the first song that's played at my funeral to be Voltaire's Zombie Prostitute. Just the thought of the look on all those grief stricken faces when that song plays makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside

One of our cats has one of those on his back right leg - it's just adorable. I think I'd dîe of an adorability överdose if he had two 😅❤️ (BP, I'm really getting tired of the endless random censoring...)
Only a year later, the word was already being used very differently. A 1951 Newsweek article about new slang reported that, in Detroit, “someone who once would be called a drip or a square is now, regrettably, a nerd.”
By the 1960s and 1970s, the term was appearing much more often in everyday writing. Somewhere along the way, it became increasingly connected with people who were intelligent but socially awkward.
By the 1980s, the nerd stereotype most of us would recognize today was firmly in place. Think computers, oversized glasses, and a pocket protector full of pens.
Movies and television helped make that image even more familiar. Being called a nerd was usually meant as an insult, suggesting that someone was uncool or too obsessed with subjects that other people did not understand.

Over time, though, the culture around nerdiness started changing. Pop culture historian Mathew Klickstein told NPR that the independent film and music scenes of the 1990s helped make “the weirdos, the misfits, the outsiders, the nerds, the geeks, cool.”
Around the same period, the computing revolution turned people like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs into household names. Being extremely knowledgeable about technology suddenly looked a lot more impressive than it once had.

Orange T**d is closer to being a jellyfish than human and I feel bad for all jellyfishes.
The interests commonly associated with nerds also moved further into the mainstream. Comic books became the foundation for some of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world, while science fiction attracted enormous audiences.
Video games grew into a massive industry of their own. Things that might once have earned someone a strange look at school became interests that millions of people openly shared.

In fact, nerdiness has become popular enough that Klickstein wondered whether some people now adopt the label mainly because they like the image attached to it.
“Are there people who are claiming they’re nerdy, claiming they’re geeky, who really just are vaunting or emulating the style without really understanding the substance?” he asked.
Either way, the old stereotype no longer fits nearly as well as it once did. A nerd can be outgoing, fashionable, popular, or anything else while still being deeply passionate about a subject.

Omg I googled it and it's real. They really did put octopodes on their pottery. (That's technically the correct plural; the root comes from Greek instead of Latin.)
Perhaps that is why so many people are happy to embrace the label today. Being a nerd can simply mean caring a lot about something and knowing more about it than the average person.
That something might be physics, fantasy novels, theater, or an incredibly specific hobby that takes hours to explain. There is plenty of room under the nerd umbrella, which is also why memes about the experience can feel relatable to so many different people.
