As humans, we should care about the environment. People do that in different ways: some recycle, others bring their own bags to the grocery store, and some go so far as throwing soup on the Mona Lisa. Vegans do their part by adopting a plant-based diet, and, as of 2026, four percent of the U.S. population is vegan, according to Statista.
The vegan lifestyle comes with its own culture and inside jokes, and today we are giving you a selection of memes that celebrate that plant-based lifestyle. Collected from three different meme pages on Instagram, these curated vegan memes are all about the struggles of being vegan, the joys that motivate people to stay vegan, and the irritation that comes with constant questions like "Where do you get your protein from?"

Only a minority of the population might be vegan, but most people still know what the lifestyle entails. It's not just about not eating meat and other animal products. Veganism is about caring for the planet and having compassion for all living beings. In the words of The Beatles' Paul McCartney, "We've all got a shot at a life. And so many animals don't! I like the idea of giving them their little shot!"
Granted, McCartney is not vegan — just vegetarian. Yet his stance on animal cruelty that goes on in the meat and dairy industries applies to vegans as well. "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian," he has also said. Even as a vegetarian, if I were ever to find myself in front of a plate with a steak on it, I couldn't help but feel like Lisa in The Simpsons and see a little lamb baaing instead.
Vegans get a bad rap, especially in online spaces. Most stereotypes paint them as a sanctimonious and irritating bunch that like to lecture people endlessly about what monsters they are for enjoying meat and other animal products. A 2024 study found that people ascribe both positive and negative stereotypes to vegans.
Participants in that survey said they see vegans as more compassionate, praised their healthier lifestyles, and admired them for their self-discipline. On the other hand, many meat eaters perceived vegans as condescending, albeit unconventional and progressive thinkers. Some also believed they're not as healthy as carnivores, citing deficiencies in iron, B12, and other vitamins and minerals.
Vegans may feel like they face a lot of scrutiny from carnivores, but research can't back that claim. According to a recent Finnish study, meat-eaters evaluate all groups (omnivores, vegans, vegetarians, meat-reducers, etc.) equally. Essentially, they're the least likely group to discriminate.
At the same time, women tend to be more tolerant of vegans, vegetarians, and meat reducers. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to support meat-eating and look down on plant-based diets and lifestyles.
People may not be going vegan, but they're consuming less meat. That's especially true for young people, who have cut down on meat and are choosing plant-based alternatives. Europeans are leading the charge here, as a little more than half of adults there have reduced their intake of conventional meat and make a concentrated effort to consume plant-based foods at least once a week.
I love the simplified version of the story of how almonds were cultivated that I once read in a post that was probably on this site. It basically said that since 99% of almond trees in the wild are poisonous, Fred went up and tried an almond and died, Greg decided well let's cut that tree down but this one over here that looks the same let's try it, and then died. This went on until someone found one that they didn't d*e from, and then they said wow guys, let's just cut all the r almond trees down and cultivate this one..
Now be truthful. With a great deal of effort you can make something that's nearly as good as an average beefburger. Or nearly as good as a normal muffin. Or a faintly disappointing plate of barbecue. You do understand that as omnivores we have access to vegan recipes AS WELL AS all te other ones?
Americans are making an effort, too. According to a 2020 Gallup poll, nearly one in four Americans has cut back on eating meat. Women, nonwhites, and Democrats are the most likely to do so. Why do people choose to cut back on meat? Most cite health reasons as the main driver behind such decisions, while others also cite animal welfare and concern for the environment.
Every single person on the planet going vegan is highly improbable, but simply reducing our meat intake can help the planet a lot. Those who eat less meat reduce their environmental impact by 30% across the main environmental criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, water pollution, and biodiversity.
Vegans in the US need to read the list of 14 ingredients used in making McDonald's fries. No, that's not a misprint, 14 ingredients. The rest of the world uses 3: spuds, vegetable oil and salt.
According to the Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) research project, compared to their meat-eating peers, vegans emit only a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to water pollution by only 27%, use 46% as much water as meat-eaters do, and account for only 34% of the loss of biodiversity.
Neither soy milk or cow's milk contains a significant amount of hormones to have an effect on the human body. So I'm look at both sides of this debate like Picard there.
I don't think I've ever heard a vegan referred to as "sickly" but that's only in my experience.
But being vegan benefits your body, too. Research shows that vegans are less prone to heart disease, hypertension, and other cardiovascular complications. A vegan diet is also a fiber-heavy diet, which we need for good digestion, to lower blood sugar and cholesterol, and to help prevent diseases like colorectal cancer.
A plant-based diet might have some disadvantages, too. The decades-long yet one of the most comprehensive studies on plant-based diets, the EPIC-Oxford study, shows that while vegetarians and vegans do experience the aforementioned benefits, they may also experience some downsides of a plant-based diet if they don't eat balanced diets or use fortification and supplementation. Vegans have a higher risk of bone fractures as they have a lower bone mineral density and a higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
If meat eaters were zealots like vegans they'd only wish you a "Happy March 14th"

I have a button somewhere that says " I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain only to eat veggies "
I don't... I would never hurt any animal at all.. I might eat them, but someone else hurt them... My kids are all vegetarian, I'm a Gen x who was raised to eat more meat than you can imagine, and now limits it mostly to eating out. Could I be vegan? I'm sure I could but it would be hard. So I do the amount I feel that I have the strength to do right now. The vegans in the audience are reading this thinking that I'm a p***k for not doing more, and everyone else is thinking why am I bothering. So pretty much I've ostracized myself from both groups. But at the end of the day I still feel good that I'm eating less meat then almost anyone that I know. And I taught my kids to be vegetarian because it's the way I wish I had been raised.
I wouldn't feel attacked if they stopped telling me that I have to follow their personal choice. I don't care if you want to be vegan, go right ahead. Just leave me alone and stop pushing your choice in my face.
It's funny that meat used to be only for the rich, and then it became for everyone, and now the vegetables that used to be the thing that were for everyone are for the rich. And when I say it's funny, I mean it's very very sad...
I like potted meat, always have. When I was in the military, a supervisor asked if I knew what was in it. "Yeah, all the stuff everyone else doesn't want to eat. So what, it's still good" The look on her face was priceless.
That's probably because omnivores don't make it their entire life and personality.
Approximately 75% of vegan food contains palm oil, and approximately 88% is made up of artificial ingredients.
I'd like to go vegan/vegetarian but an obnoxious amount of my safe foods have animal products in them. Still, I try my best to at least source them as ethically as possible.
We can only do as much as we can! As long as you're honest to yourself about what's a limitation and what's an excuse (while not being too demanding or harsh on yourself! Your own limits are also real limitations, but very hard to identify as there's never a hard clear line with them), you're already doing your part.
Load More Replies...Grew up in a vegetarian household, 3/4 of the family are still veggie, I’ve err strayed somewhat… We’d go to events at the Vegetarian Society and you could grade the people there. Veggies looked fine, vegans fine but generally slimmer, fruitarians (look it up) thin, slightly wild eyed, ready to tell you at any given moment about the future of the planet and how ‘in tune’ they were with the earth, they always had a ‘unique’ smell. I’d say that cutting down on meat and finding veggie alternatives is a good thing but don’t ever go preachy about it.
