It was not until the vessel reached Saint Helena on April 24 that the situation began to unravel because that was when the first victim was taken off the ship and his wife also decided to disembark. She eventually caught a flight to Johannesburg but tragically fell ill and passed away on April 26 which is when the alarm bells really started ringing for international health officials.

Around the same time a British passenger was evacuated from the ship near Ascension Island and he became the first person to officially test positive for the virus in early May. By the time the ship reached the waters off Cape Verde on May 3rd, BBC News and other outlets were reporting on the outbreak. There was a very tense standoff for a few days while officials decided where the ship could go and eventually some of the sickest people were evacuated to specialized hospitals in Europe.
