Growing up in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Jane Therese Curtin was the second of three children born to John Joseph and Mary Constance Farrell Curtin. Her Irish Catholic upbringing instilled a grounded perspective.


Curtin attended Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart before earning an associate degree from Elizabeth Seton Junior College in New York City. She later pursued comedy, dropping out of Northeastern University to join an improvisational troupe.

A significant romance marked Jane Curtin’s adult life, as she married television producer Patrick Lynch in April 1975, the same year her career began to ascend. Their long-standing union spanned several decades.


Curtin and Lynch had one daughter, Tess Lynch. She remained with Lynch until his passing in 2025, maintaining a private family life while balancing her public career.

Jane Curtin’s breakthrough arrived as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, where her roles on “Weekend Update” and as Prymaat Conehead earned her widespread recognition. She anchored the news segment with a unique blend of seriousness and comedic timing.
