Academic research. The ROI is nearly 4:1, so it makes economic sense to invest in it. The Repubs don’t want discoveries that disagree with their philosophy so, they don’t fund it anymore. Anyone looking to make a basic science career at this point is almost certainly on a fool’s errand.
