No, a black raspberry is a distinct fruit from a blackberry. It is a less common variety of the red raspberry. Though related to the blackberry, it is an entirely different fruit, smaller and seedier, but sweeter and delicious. Black raspberries have hollow cores (like the red raspberry), a very short growing season (late June, early July in Northeastern Indiana, where I live), and are not widely available commercially. They grow wild, often along the edges of wooded areas where I live. I grew up picking them to clean and freeze for later processing into seedless black raspberry jelly at home. It can take me several years of picking (during the 2-3 week ripe period) to get enough berries to process, but it's worth it. Chambord (the French liquor often used in French Martinis), is predominately black raspberry based.
