I too make these crowns, and my shells come from a beach nearby my home. Yes there were washed up on the beach and I didn't kill or remove anything. I am vegan and love all living creatures. I do not order my shells and most have chips missing, barnacles and just broken pieces, but that doesn't make them less beautiful. So, yes, it can be done without hurting anything.
