This is why I don't like it when people start calling kids gifted. Sure, encourage them, but this puts so much pressure on them. There is nothing wrong with being average. Learning that failure is ok and knowing how to deal with it is more important in my opinion. Some of my teachers saw me as a gifted kid and I was also compared a lot to my two very smart brothers. I also always felt like I had to do well to prove some people in my life wrong (my bullies, my racist family and my father who was just waiting to see me fail). I'm not gifted. I do have a certain knack for math and I always worked hard, but that's it. At one moment, when my grades started slipping, I really took it badly. I started sleeping less to work more and my grades only slipped more. It took taking a step back and realising that I was only competing against myself to feel better and with that my grades actually went up. My only goal is to improve myself (not only grade-wise), not to compare myself to others.

I've had a load of surgeries that required anesthesia. Not a single doctor has ever told me WHY you're not supposed to eat before surgery. (I always fasted as directed, but it would be super helpful to patients if doctor's provided the WHY.)

I don't think (but as in my other post, I'm no expert) that's actually an offence, but yeah, could be part of a shame thing that stopped her acting earlier.

I've no idea, but in nearly ll countries there is requirement to do so within a short time of the birth, and presumably there would be some repercussions if one failed to do so. The mother might not have known exactly either, but could have been scared of it anyway. A new mum isn't likely to be in the best state to always make rational informed decisions - makes me wonder if there wasn't some other family, possibly even the father, involved in the situation and the lie.

Agree - and, like being overweight, doctors tend to ignore symptoms and problems and blame it all on smoking/weight. Of course losing weight and quitting will help everything to a point, but smoking isn’t causing menopause or autoimmune conditions.

Can confirm. My dad had an accident when I was 18 and sustained catastrophic brain damage. He lived for another 21 years, but "my dad" díed the day he had his accident. It was still absolutely awful on the night he actually did díe, but the person who my dad had been was long gone :( It's like he díed twice.

I can understand why people lie about smoking. I don't condone it, but I get it. At this point, everyone knows how dangerous it is and no one likes to admit they're add*cted to something that's so unhealthy. There's a level of shame there that they're confronted with every time they see the doctor. But no matter how uncomfortable it is, doctors need to know all aspects of your health so they can form the safest treatment plans for their patients.
