Our accents are a big part of our identity and sense of pride. An RP accent is associated with privilege. We wouldn't dream of pretending to have been born into privilege if we weren't. The reason you hear so many British people in the media speak RP is because historically, it was the accent favoured by elite drama schools (who would often "train" students out of their accent) and by the BBC.
