I do it that way, but only when it's the easier way to do it. At least when I was that age, most people didn't need to add or multiply a number less than 10 by another number less than 10 because we'd memorized them all in elementary school. A good example is converting Fahrenheit to Celsius in my head: ºC = (ºF * 1.8) + 32. I multiply by 2, subtract 10% and add 32.
