I hate to say it but I've done similar. Was shopping at a department store and trying to find someone to help. Spotted someone in high-vis and asked them. About 5 seconds in, my brain caught up and I was like "They don't wear high-vis here, what are you doing?" I said sorry and she laughed it off.
