In the US, police have the highest rate of domestic violence of any profession; they are often unsympathetic towards the victim. If the abused party won't admit to the abuse, as many in this thread have stated, after police leave, the victim will be harmed or killed, not might. Domestic violence calls are also the highest risk call for police in the US. Abuse is about control and if police represent loss of that control, the abuser is likely to strike out at them. Leaving an abuser is the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence; they are most likely to be killed by their abuser within the next 3 weeks. Most abusers also very carefully control the purse strings: if the abuser hasn't allowed their victim to earn money and the abuser goes to jail, who's paying the rent and buying groceries? .Very difficult situation to escape, especially when most abusers work diligently to isolate their victim so they can't access help or support.
