I lost my husband about 1.5 years ago, and I am so grateful that we went low-contact with most of his family ages ago. We did our own version of holidays, stopped showing up where he didn't want to be, and setting boundaries. When he died, I made all the arrangements, which made his family very angry - I didn't do anything to acknowledge the loss to his family, only to celebrate the life he had and the amazing person he had become. Since he passed, only 2 people in his very large family have reached out to check on me. His mother is hurt that I am not a comfort for her. His father was upset that I honored Mike's wishes that no one in his family come see him in the hospital, so I robbed them of saying goodbye. I will gladly carry all their anger knowing he was happier not involved with them and that I allowed him to pass exactly as he would have wanted.

We said "no kids" with the exception of two girls who were old enough to be jr bridesmaids, plus 3 younger from his immediate family. I had two guests who took issue - one who begged every day (co-worker) because it was a "great chance for other co-workers to meet her son" and because her mother had made my headpiece (?? not good reasons for an exception) and a friend of my mother's who refused to come if she couldn't bring her adult daughter (not invited) and grandchild in place of her husband, who WAS invited but didn't want to come. One high school friend just ignored the request and brought her young daughter. I told people the venue wasn't kid friendly, and that woman spent the whole reception chasing her little girl around.

NTA. I had a similar situation. Niece needed a job. Something became available at my office. I made her aware of it, but that was it. She completed the applications online, listed me as a reference without asking and identified me as "her mother's best friend". She was afraid they wouldn't consider her if she had a relative in the building. AFTER hiting send, she called to ask me what she should have done. I have an unusual name, and I told her that HR would recognize me and call me and I would not lie about being a relative. I have a long career and good reputation that I'll not jeopordize for her, but especially since it was unnecessary to lie - we would have been in very different depts with very different reporting structures. Best I offered was to respond "I don't know" if they asked why she lied. She planned to tell them that she misunderstood the question. I was equally offended that she tried to pass off that her mother was my best friend - no way that was ever the case!!!!

So many YTAs. The sister lied to get the job. Not worth risking the OP's reputation at work for doing a favour for a person who let her down the last time. I'll go for NTA.

Same here. Our front door takes a little effort to close, so anyone coming/going from the house requires us to check the door, regardless of verbal instructions.

We had similar at our house while Tigger was alive. Everyone knew not to pet Tigger, but some couldn't resist trying. He had belonged to a neighbor who declawed him and put him outside, then moved away. He never bothered trying to scratch anyone because he knew he wasn't doing any damagage, but he could launch himself on your arm and dig in his teeth while kicking with his back legs. 80% of the time, he was a great cat. But if the tail was thunking...listen to the tail!!

From personal experience, OP needs to hire plain clothes security for wedding and reception. Only the wedding party and BIL need to know they are there. If sister is MOH, now way this guy is not going to show up.

I could have written this post! My late husband would do that very same thing, and it made me defensive. No amount of explaining why his choice of words made me feel like I was being blamed helped. I had to learn to not take offense because he insisted there was none there. But he had to accept that sometimes the reason would be "because it hasn't been done yet...". When he got okay with that, I noticed that he asked for reasons a lot less.

Similarly, I was at a charity auction and realized that some Karen was sending her son (maybe 10 or 11) over to bid just a dollar higher than me whenever she saw someone right on that sheet. That way she could keep sitting at her table chatting away. Item was still reasonably priced at that point, so I took a chance and bid a single bid for much more than it was worth - I make regular donations to this place anyway, so why not? Sure enough, as soon as I sit down little boy runs over and bids a dollar more, just as he was told. She won the item, never knew what happened until she went to the table to pay. I will never forget how happy I was that night LOL

This story was actually pretty triggering for me. No pregnancy involved, but one time years ago my husband decided I had been cheating and wanted me to prove that I had not (I had not). How would someone even do that? His "evidence" was highly circumstancial, and really just pointed to the fact we had insecurities and communication issues to deal with. But I was devestated and crying all the time, while he thought I should be responding with anger at being falsely accused. I really admire how OPs wife handled everything, and which I had been able to do that. Would have saved us a lot of heartache.

Reminded me of a time I was in OP's shoes. Long story, but I have a much younger "sister" who is not a blood relation (My mom cared for her when her mother/good friend was having a rough time of things. She was little, and grew up calling me sister). My sister was graduating from college the same month of her wedding. Everyone agreed that we would put $ into the wedding versus big graduation gifts. Her mother got her a bag of stuff from a discount store - notepads, pens, hair ties, etc. My sister was graduating from my alma mater, and I gave her my class ring that I bought myself. Loved that ring, but didn't wear it a lot anymore. She cried, and her mother was angry with me for not abiding by the "rules". Maybe I should have given her a heads up, but I don't believe gift-giving is supposed to be a competition. I think her mom could have written her a letter or framed a photo of them together that would have been just as meaningful as what I did.

It's perfectly acceptable to have a "last straw". There's just a moment where something in a bad situation "clicks" and you have to move on. As for reporting MIL to CPS - don't avoid doing it because you assume how it will turn out. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But you have to do the right thing which is report your concerns.

Uninvite dad to the dinner. Then see if he and GF would like to do something with you another time instead. If they don't want to do that, write them off.

Reminds me of my situation last year after my husband died. He had always helped out a sister financially and cared about her more than other siblings. Once upon a time we looked at buying a small house she could "rent" from us, but decided it was beyond our means. He also loaned her his car a couple of times to take long trip in, because her car was not good for that. After he died I contantly heard "he wanted me to have a save place to live" and "he wanted me to have a better car" that became "you must be lonely living alone" & "what will you do with an extra car in your way". Eventually it was "I want dibs on the car but I can't afford to pay you for it" and "I'm getting a place rent free but I want to live closer to you". I am now mostly NC, and that's okay.

Yeah, not going to praise this guy for destroying nature. Bees also love roses.
