The original researcher Dr. George Otto Gey, head of tissue culture research at Johns Hopkins Hospital sent the cells free of charge all over the world so other's could use them in research. This is why the "HeLa" cells are in pretty much every cell batch used in research anywhere in the world. Dr. Gay nor John's Hopkins made any money on these cells.
