It was standard protocol to not get permission from any patient who's cells were used in this and other research. Patient consent was unheard of in 1951. Henrietta Lacks cells reproduced in a way no other patient cells had done and these cells advanced and enabled cancer research in no way experienced before. The original researcher Dr. George Otto Gey, head of tissue culture research at Johns Hopkins Hospital sent the cells free of charge all over the world so other's could use them in research. This is why the "HeLa" cells are in pretty much every cell batch used in research anywhere in the world. Dr. Gay nor John's Hopkins made any money on these cells. Pharmaceutical companies have made a ton of money using the "HeLa" cells lines. Read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.
