Well, it was a war, everything was said with hostility. But i agree that if someone calls a Vietnamese person "Vietcong" NOW it clearly is not a compliment. At the very least, there are FAR MORE offensive slurs that came out of the Vietnam war that we don't say, but it doesn't make it ok outside the context of the war.

Many racist terms were "never intended to be racist" at the time they were coined, and yet, they're STILL racist and we should NOT use them. BTW, "Vietcong" was ABSOLUTELY used as a pejorative term during the Vietnam War. It is not inherently a racist/slur term, but it was often used with hostility.

It's a historical English moniker for Vietnam war era Vietnamese communist party members. The Vietnamese term for a Vietnamese communist was "cong san Viet Nam". To be able to name the group, "Vietcong" became the shorthand. In order to historically place this joke, the OP used the shorthand term. It was never intended to be racist, it was only naming the "other guys" at the time. The term died after the war and was misappropriated by racists who didn't know it actual origin.
