We all know the feeling of having a word on the tip of your tongue. But did you know that there’s actually a word for that phenomenon? It’s called lethologica, and it refers to “the inability to retrieve a specific word as a response to a visual, auditory, or tactile presentation,” explains a study in the Journal of the Indian Academy of Geriatrics. 

This phenomenon is universal, with people all over the globe who speak all sorts of languages reporting that they experience it. And unfortunately, these moments tend to increase with age. It’s also common for people to recall partial bits of information, such as the letter the word begins with or how many syllables the word contains. And apparently, proper nouns are the hardest words to remember.    

While scientists still aren’t 100% sure what causes lethologica exactly, it does seem to happen more often when people are tired. And while it may sound counterintuitive, experts say the best response to this experience is to ignore it. 

Stop trying to rack your brain for whatever word you’re looking for, and it might magically appear. This is referred to as “spontaneous resolution,” or the moment when you suddenly remember the word you were looking for minutes or hours after the fact. But if you notice that you’re experiencing that tip-of-the-tongue feeling far too often, you might want to speak to a doctor just in case, to make sure there aren’t any cognitive issues that need to be addressed.
