People like to gossip — it might just be in some of our nature. There’s something about talking about other people’s problems, joys, and even misfortunes that tickles our fancy. In fact, research finds that we spend an average of 52 minutes a day talking about people who aren't present. Discussing other people’s secrets can be thrilling, but what about the times when you find out something juicy against your will?
A few days ago, Wendy Brown, aka @chronicallyhumored on Threads, asked people to share the juiciest secrets they have overheard: “What’s the biggest secret you’ve learned purely because someone forgot to lower their voice? Turns out, people have accidentally eavesdropped on all kinds of secrets, like workplace affairs, what their parents really think of them, and even some hot celebrity goss.

When I was walking to my young daughter‘s room in the ICU, I overheard the attending doctor telling all the students doing rounds the reason why my daughter was in the ICU was because they messed up in the ER.
He was explaining what the doctor in the ER did wrong when he looked up and saw me and got real quiet.
Our hospital bill was over $1 million but we didn’t have to pay a dime. I think they were just happy I didn’t sue them.

I was on a train headed from Italy to France reading a book written in English. Two older women sat beside me and proceeded to tell beautifully lewd stories entirely in French while I slowly stopped reading and exclusively began eavesdropping. They were hushed enough not to be making any sort of scene and I was clearly an English speaker with an overnight bag, but I spoke decent French. It lasted about 30 minutes before I grinned a tiny bit and they both went “NON!!!”

When I was a tween I was in a cruise ship elevator and overheard a guy in a suit talking about a product he was launching that you put in the toilet to keep your poo from smelling.
I ran back to the cabin to tell my parents, who were convinced that the guy knew I was listening and was just messing with me. Imagine my glee when Poo-pourri hit the market.

I once learned the a coworker was having an affair with our boss after she went to the loo to make a phone call, with a live microphone pinned to her shirt. We were working an event, and well everyone at that event learned her secret.

I was eating at a restaurant and seen a girl crying while someone comforted her. I was trying to mind my own business but as she sobbed she loudly said “and she reminds me every year I’m a failed abortion”.
It was her birthday.

When I was 10 or so, I found out my grandfather got drunk and sh*t at my Grandma. He sh*t up the house, she ran outside and hid behind the garbage cans and wasn't injured. That sounds like attempted m**der to me, but nothing happened to him, no arrest, no prison term.

I was doing makeup for NYFW and had to do some light makeup for a children’s dress designer line. When the little girl sat down in the chair, her mom gave her a phone to play on so she would sit still then the mom walked away. The little girl was babbling the whole time I was doing her makeup and then said casually and very loud “my dad won’t let me use his phone cause he has pictures of ladies on there!”

My grandmother casually during one of our nightly 1am convos told me about my grandpa’s twins he had in either Germany or France during the war. Casually. She has a picture of their mom in her wallet. Years later I mention it to my dad/aunts and they all lost their minds. No one knew. Bonus fun fact: my aunt is named after their mom.

A manager once loudly yelled at her supervisor to fire two employees. Demanded they be fired immediately. Then screamed at him that he was the father of her child. She forgot not everyone in the department was gone. Always wondered if her supervisor was the father and not her husband.

I was on a commuter train coming home from work years ago and the WHOLE car heard a guy tell his mistress (on the phone) that she should come to his office Christmas party. He was going to tell everyone, including his wife, that she was his cousin. She wasn’t an easy sell because he was really trying hard to convince her no one would know. Umm Sir.

I was pregnant, asleep upstairs and woke up to hear my ex and his friend talking. They were talking about sneaking two girls in the house because I was a heavy sleeper (not while pregnant - I pretended I was asleep). Walked downstairs to find them all partying with things other than alcohol and green.
I left him that night and never looked back.

A dude was telling another dude how he threw paint on a cat, set it on fire, and watched it run away through a hole in a fence.
Anyway, that was the day when I realized that when I hear something like this I have absolutely no more filter, and because the dude was twice my size he could have k**led me if we weren't in public.
I started yelling at him, and he tried to scare me by pretending to hit me. This was before smartphones, so I couldn't have just filmed him. I still hate him to this day.

Learned I was secretly hated by my mom and I was a product of SA. My grandmother wanted her to pay more attention to me. She yelled if it wasn’t for her damn dad she wouldn’t be here. I didn’t want her. Well it checks out.

I found out my grandma had a secret baby at 16. It was a closed adoption (against her will) and the baby found her 20 years later when a lady at the record office let her see her file (breaking the law). Anyway, my grandma ONLY told my mom (who only had brothers), and I found out when I overheard her on the phone with her SISTER. I annoyed them until they told everyone and now everyone's met.

Oh easy. I've been to only one bridal shower in my entire life and it basically turned into chaos in the end. The bride went out at one point with her maid of honour and they disappeared for at least 30 minutes. We were about to go look for them when the maid of honour came back into the restaurant and (very) loudly said: "I still can't believe you cheated on X." Everyone heard it. Including X's sister. The phone got out and all went into chaos from there. There was no wedding later.

At Boston Logan on a layover and overheard a sweet couple talking about how they take romantic vacations twice a year. Turns out they’d actually been having an affair for FIFTEEN YEARS. High school sweethearts who married other people and “reconnected” later in life.
