{"id":2370,"date":"2022-09-22T03:49:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T03:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/?p=2370"},"modified":"2022-09-24T20:39:19","modified_gmt":"2022-09-24T20:39:19","slug":"original-michelin-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/original-michelin-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrifying Photos of the Original Michelin Man"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 122-year-old Michelin Man is one of the world&#8217;s oldest and most beloved trademarks, but his original form was far from what we know him today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bibendum, known outside of the English language, was at one point a smoker, beer drinker, and overweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michelin founders Edouard and Andr\u00e9 Michelin found the inspiration for Bibendum in 1894 at an auto show where a stack of tires resembled a man without arms or legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four years later, Andr\u00e9 came across a sketch by an artist known as O&#8217;Galop showing a man holding a goblet and toasting &#8220;Now let us drink&#8221; in Latin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They requested O&#8217;Galop change the man into the Michelin man with a goblet of nails and broken glass with the words \u201cC&#8217;est \u00e0 dire: \u00c0 votre sant\u00e9. Le pneu Michelin boit l&#8217;obstacle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This translates to &#8220;Now is the time to drink. That is to say, to your health. The Michelin tire drinks up obstacles.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early versions of this new character are nothing short of terrifying based on modern sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Original 1928 Ad<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
