{"id":3413,"date":"2022-11-20T22:04:34","date_gmt":"2022-11-20T22:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/?p=3413"},"modified":"2023-03-08T06:11:05","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T06:11:05","slug":"common-historical-stories-that-arent-true","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/common-historical-stories-that-arent-true\/","title":{"rendered":"15 Common Historical Stories That Aren\u2019t True"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s a story without a little buzz, humor, and hyperbole?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This probably explains why many common stories passed down through generations survive on some form of twist \u2013 or exaggeration \u2013 to survive and command some fanfare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To a large extent, Hollywood, history teachers, and the media are the chief perpetrators of these stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in this article, we&#8217;ll be setting the record straight &#8211; 15 historical stories that aren\u2019t true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 Spartans Warriors Defended Against 10,000 Persians<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spread by Zack Synder\u2019s \u2018300\u2019 film, the story is told that in 480 BC, Sparta was celebrating a week-long festival of \u2018Carnea\u2019 as a tribute to Apollo Karneois, the Greek god of herds and flocks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In paying homage to this god, worshippers were forbidden to participate in any form of war; otherwise, they would have ruined their food source for the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"679\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-679x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-679x1024.jpeg 679w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-199x300.jpeg 199w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-768x1158.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-716x1080.jpeg 716w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae-150x226.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Scene_of_the_Battle_of_the_Thermopylae.jpeg 973w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Battle of the Thermopylae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tradition was piously preserved, except in the year in question, news traveled that Xerxes I, King of Persia, was coming to avenge his father&#8217;s death after his failed attempt to invade Greece 10 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the festival was much in season, Leonidas, King of Sparta, could only gather 300 guards to defend against the Persian army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A point often re-echoed is that other Greek city-states mustered up 4,000 soldiers to wade off this intrusion. But as compelling as this too may sound, it is, however, a myth. About 100,000 to 150,000 Greek soldiers joined the face-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonidas&#8217;s soldiers fought bravely and defended themselves for three days until they were betrayed by a countryman who snitched on them and revealed a backroad down the mountains \u2013 a strategic front for the Spartan army. It was at this point that Leonidas and his army were slain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/300-spartans-at-the-battle-of-thermopylae\/\" title=\"The Amazing Truth Behind the 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae\ufffc\">&nbsp;Not 300, as most accounts claim, but 1500 soldiers.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jewish Slaves Built the Egyptian Pyramids<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Professor Amahai Mazar of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reported, this myth arose from a speech presented by Menachem Begin, former Israeli Prime Minister, when he visited Egypt in 1977.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/s\/amp.theguardian.com\/world\/2010\/jan\/11\/great-pyramid-tombs-slaves-egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\"> Deiter Wildung<\/a>, former Director Berlin Museum, the myth was sold for a long time, perpetuated by Hollywood and the media, mainly because it was virtually difficult to stomach the fact that such magnificent pyramids were built without forced labor or oppression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-1024x835.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-1024x835.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-300x245.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-768x626.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-1080x880.jpeg 1080w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-150x122.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Building the pyramids<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the myth traveled far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/debunking-the-myth-that-slaves-built-the-pyramids\/\" title=\"Debunking The Myth That Slaves Built The Pyramids\">on the back of sentiments that slaves were generally deployed for such projects<\/a> as building pyramids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Deiter points out the pyramids were built out of loyalty to the pharaohs \u2013 a claim that recent archaeological findings have corroborated. However, Professor Mazar laid the issue to rest when he pointed out that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/science\/articles\/2010\/01\/12\/egypt-new-find-shows-slaves-didnt-build-pyramids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\"> Jews did not exist within the period<\/a> the pyramids were built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>King Tutankhamun\u2019s Tomb is Cursed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Tutankhamun&#8217;s tomb is said to be mystically deadly to persons who break into his tomb. But she is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vikings Wore Horned Helmets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The popular belief that Vikings wore horned helmets dates back to the early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century when Gustav Malmstr\u00f6mstems, a Swedish artist, included the imagery of burly men Viking warriors marching to war with horns in one of his best-selling works. According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/did-vikings-really-wear-horned-helmets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\"> History Channel<\/a>, findings from death sites reveal that Viking Warriors strode to battle bare-headed, and in some cases, wore leather headgear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Napoleon Bonaparte was Short<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Napoleon earned the name &#8220;Le Petit Caporal,&#8221; meaning &#8220;Little Corporal,&#8221; out of his soldiers&#8217; affection for him. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historydefined.net\/why-do-people-believe-napoleon-was-short\/\" title=\"Why Do People Believe Napoleon Was Short?\">But Napoleon wasn&#8217;t as short as we may think.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going by pre-French Revolution units, Napoleon stretched as far as 5 feet 2 inches; by US measurements, he would be about 5 feet 6 inches tall. However, the truth is that a vomitorium is an exit or entrance of a large architectural structure where people can traverse different building areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Christopher Columbus Discovered America<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting in 1492, Christopher Columbus<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2013\/10\/14\/christopher-columbus-3-things-you-think-he-did-that-he-didnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\"> embarked on four different trips<\/a> and landed on various Caribbean Islands \u2013 now known as the Bahamas \u2013 an Island called Hispaniola. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True \u2013 Columbus explored South and Central American coasts but didn&#8217;t reach North America, which Native Americans had already inhabited. Also, Phoenician sailors had likely crossed the Atlantic decades before this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the US can celebrate Columbus Day every year, but that&#8217;s as far as the pomp goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not discover America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Albert Einstein Failed Math<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life coaches and motivational speakers often peddle this claim to inspire determination and excellence. This myth was particularly amplified by rumors in Ripley&#8217;s &#8220;Believe It Or Not,&#8221; where Einstein was said to fail at solving an equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> However, the claim that Einstein failed at math is false and misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a young age, Einstein had always excelled at math.
