Poor Childhood, Big Dreams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nJohn Lee was born to John Lee Senior and Mary Lee (n\u00e9e Harris) on August 15, 1864, in Abbotskerswell, Devon. His parents were poor and had no money to spare for his education. But John was ambitious \u2014 he wanted to earn money quickly and explore the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He enlisted in the Royal Navy. But a severe leg injury put him out of commission and made him leave the Navy within a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
