I learned that they/them can be used as a singular pronoun in the 1960s in elementary school. More recently, I've learned the first written use of they as a singular pronoun was in a poem in 1375. Chaucer used it in the Canterbury Tales, and Shakespeare used it multiple times in different plays. It's unfortunate that the school you went to was not as good as the tiny school, in the middle of nowhere in NW Ohio, that I went to.

The reason they tell you not to have anything to eat for however long before a surgery is because once you are under anesthesia, there is a chance you can aspirate into your lungs. That's not something you or the surgical team wants to have happen.

You would usually use the sentence "They like chocolate", or any sort of similar sentence, with context. You would address the proper noun before using the pronoun "they", which would usually remove any confusion about whom you were referring to.

There is a shape difference and being rubberized so that you can use them in shower, a larger head, and more pivot range, and different "moisturizing strips". So, they are different, but really not enough to justify the difference in price.

I liked rainbows long before I learned about LGBTQ flags etc. If people want to use rainbow colours for LGBTQ causes or a rainbow as a symbol of hope (as in Christianity, along with the dove), or just cos they're pretty, then that's fine. But you can't outright 'own' or gatekeep colours or a rainbow purely to fit a belief or cause. Rainbows are scientific weather phenomena. They were weather phenomena long before humanity and religion existed. And will be around long after we are gone. Rainbows can just be Rainbows. There's only subtext if you put it there or ignorant people make assumptions.

It's not difficult at all to remember someone's preferred pronouns. I'm old (Gen X) and can manage it just fine. The same way that we learned that using the R-word wasn't okay (we used to all the time when I was a kid) - you adjust and you learn when the social landscape changes. It's not hard at all. And if you do slip up, apologize honestly and ask them what their preferred pronouns are to make sure you get it right the next time.
