A “Made in USA” label can make a tool feel like a safer bet before it ever reaches the toolbox. It can also make the price tag look a little less shocking. But before paying extra for a wrench, drill, saw, or other tool because of an American-origin claim, take a few minutes to check what the wording actually means.
The Federal Trade Commission recently warned seven companies about questionable “Made in USA” claims involving products that appeared to contain imported components or significant imported content. The action does not mean every American-made claim deserves suspicion, and it does not accuse every tool manufacturer of wrongdoing. It does offer a useful reminder for shoppers: a patriotic label can influence a purchase, so the details behind that label matter.
