The death of a man in his 80s has taken the Northern Territory's COVID-19 toll to 16. (AAP)

Indoor mask mandates will end in the Northern Territory "sooner rather than later" amid falling COVID-19 case numbers, Chief Minister Michael Gunner says.

Mr Gunner has also signalled the likely scrapping of check-ins at shops and other venues in upcoming reviews of virus restrictions.
