Australian shares have defied a heavy sell-off to clock a third straight week of gains, thanks in part to rebounding technology and mining stocks.

The S&P/ASX200 gained 87 points on Friday, up one per cent, to 8806.7, as the broader All Ordinaries rose 100 points, or 1.13 per cent, to 8940.4.
