Children who commit serious crimes while on bail face at least a year in jail under a controversial legislation's expansion, sparking concerns for an overloaded youth detention system.

The Queensland government on Tuesday confirmed it would introduce the legislation to parliament this week, creating a new offence that would apply to both juveniles and adult offenders.
