UNBELIEVABLE: Celtic hero ange postecoglou on winning things in second year line | History Defined

Ange Postecoglou has explained why it was so important for him to come out with his now infamous "always win in my second year" quote while at Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Celtic manager was discussing his career with SPL.com following his move to Al-Nassr and was asked about the line he used during his time in North London.

Postecoglou, at the time after a poor start to the Premier League season, said: "I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed.

“I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

It rattled cages down south before the Australian backed it up by lifting the Europa League with Spurs who hadn't won a trophy in 17 years at that point.

And, while also remembering his two years at Parkhead, Postecoglou revealed the real reason behind his decision to have his say with the one-liner.

“That quote was when people didn't believe I could win anything because I was at a club, Tottenham, that hadn't won anything for 17 years, hadn't won a European trophy for 40 years. And I was in my second year.

“When I was at Celtic, I won a double in my first year. So, I think the reason I made that statement was I wanted to make sure that people understood that I knew we could win something at Tottenham, a club that wasn't recognised for winning things.

“So, for me, it doesn't matter, first year, second year, third year. Every year I coach, I want to win things. But it's not just about winning; it's about how you win, how you play your football. That is also very important to me.

“[I’m] super excited to be here. It's a privilege and an honour for me to coach such a big club, and we'll have some fun this year. We will make an impact. We'll try and be as successful as possible and we'll do it in a way that everyone enjoys.”
