A smoke detector that stays quiet during a fire has one job, and it is failing at the worst possible moment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned consumers to stop using certain JNHCD combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors immediately because the devices can fail to alert people to hazardous smoke and fire.
That makes this a good time to look up at the ceiling and give those little white plastic guardians a second look. A quick inspection could reveal a device that looks perfectly normal, displays numbers on its screen, and still might not provide the warning a household needs when every second counts.
