A mother who allegedly killed one of her young children and critically injured two others in a stabbing attack could face homicide charges, as a spate of alleged domestic violence murders rocks multiple communities.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna said the use of knives or edged weapons in four alleged domestic violence murders over the weekend was "barbaric".
