REVEALED: Commanders defeat cardinals 20 16 | Rare Historical Photos

The Washington Commanders began the Josh Harris era with a 20-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals in front of a sold-out crowd at FedEx Field.

Things started promising for the Commanders, as quarterback Sam Howell found running back Brian Robinson Jr. for a seven-yard touchdown to give the Commanders a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

But negative plays were the theme of the first half for Washington. The Commanders had three first-half turnovers, one of which, a Howell fumble, was picked up by Arizona linebacker Cameron Thomas for an easy touchdown to give the Cardinals a 13-7 lead.

Washington was aggressive to finish the half, leading to a Joey Slye field goal to make it 13-10 at halftime.

The turnover luck turned Washington’s way in the second half, as defensive end Montez Sweat sacked Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs, forcing a fumble that defensive tackle Daron Payne recovered. The Commanders would turn that into seven points as Howell scored on a six-yard touchdown allowing Washington to re-take the lead.

The Commanders remained stout on defense, and Arizona never threatened again.

Howell completed 19 of 31 passes for 202 yards with a touchdown and interception. He also rushed for a score. Washington outgained Arizona, 248-210.

Next up for the Commanders is a trip to face the Denver Broncos in Week 2.
