The intriguing prospect of a prime-time duel in the desert between Australia's top two tennis players has been dashed after Alex de Minaur lost to Marin Cilic in a Dubai Open boilover.

The Aussie No.1 lost the first three games en route to dropping the first set and though he drew back to level with a much better second set that proved illusory.
