In a devastating turn of events, wildfires have swept through central Chile, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. As the fires gradually burn themselves out, authorities are faced with the challenging task of assessing the damage while grappling with the grim reality that more than 300 people are still missing. Tragically, these fires have claimed the lives of 123 individuals, making it Chile's deadliest disaster since the destructive earthquake that struck the nation in 2010.
The fires, which began on Friday in the mountainous eastern edge of Viña del Mar, a popular beach resort known for its vibrant music festival, quickly spread due to the combination of dry weather and strong winds. The towns of Quilpé and Villa Alemana have also been severely affected, with countless homes reduced to mere ashes. President Gabriel Boric personally visited the region on Tuesday to witness the devastation firsthand and offer support to the affected communities.
