Asthma is a chronic lung condition affecting millions worldwide, and in India, it is a common disorder. It is estimated that over 30 million people in India suffer from asthma. However, only about 9 percent of these individuals receive accurate and appropriate treatment. This gap in treatment is largely due to the myths and stigmas surrounding asthma in India, preventing patients from seeking proper diagnosis and care from pulmonologists. As a result, many patients continue to suffer from various symptoms, and untreated asthma attacks can be fatal.
One prevalent myth is that asthma is entirely curable. Asthma is, in fact, a genetic disorder that cannot be completely cured. However, it can be controlled to an extent that individuals with asthma can perform day-to-day activities beyond 100 percent of their capabilities without experiencing symptoms. With proper management, asthma patients can live symptom-free lives, engaging in any activity they desire.
