The classic mile race is to return to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, rekindling the memory of the great Australian runner John Landy and his legendary British rival Roger Bannister.
Organisers of the Games, a pared-down celebration relocated to Scotland when Victoria pulled out as hosts, also revealed on Thursday that swimming will have its biggest ever programme - good news for Australia's Dolphins who dominated in 2022.
Para sport and track cycling will be the other big winners next year, also enjoying their most extensive medal event programmes yet.
