Award-winning writer KR Meera is back with a new novel this year. Titled 'Assassin', the book was initially published in Malayalam as 'Ghathakan', and it is now translated into English by J. Devika. A page-turner, this is a story that questions gender and identity that's prevalent in our patriarchal society.
'Assassin' is set in the backdrop of the beginning of India's demonetization and it ends on the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. The story follows Satyapriya, a middle-aged working woman, who lives alone in a big city. One night in November 2016, Satyapriya is attacked by an unidentified man. While she is left unhurt, her paralysed father hints at this being the first attempt to kill her. Her father dies soon unexpectedly, which leaves a devastated Satyapriya alone in search of unraveling the conspiracy surrounding her.
