The tax system is being used as a "weapon" of financial abuse that saddles vulnerable victims with astronomical debts and the prospect of bankruptcy, the taxation watchdog says.
The frank assessment comes from the Taxation Ombudsman, who urged the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to do far more to intervene and support victim-survivors.
