Australia needs a new wave of investment in pumped hydropower projects to support its transition to renewable energy, former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has told a conference, as the nation cannot rely on batteries alone.

But the businessman also poured cold water on the nuclear power plans of his former party, expressing scepticism about how much the switch would cost.
