On the night of August 4, content creator César Gastélum was recording a livestream with two friends in a KFC parking lot in Culiacán's Tres Ríos neighborhood when two helmeted men on a motorcycle pulled alongside the group and opened fire. Gastélum died in front of an online audience watching in real time; his two companions walked away unharmed. Footage later reviewed by investigators shows the same motorcycle passing the location once before the gunmen circled back and seconds before the shots, one of Gastélum's companions can be heard warning, "Those guys scare me." Four days later, nobody has been arrested and no cartel faction has claimed the killing.
