Hundreds of people gathered in central Birmingham to welcome the New Year with what they believed would be a spectacular fireworks display, only to leave disappointed.

Revellers were misled into attending a non-existent New Year’s Eve fireworks event in Centenary Square on Wednesday, after false rumours circulated online about a display to mark the arrival of 2026. But no fireworks took place.
