Unlawful audio recordings made by police at a Tasmanian prison during an investigation linked to murderer Susan Neill-Fraser will be the subject of an independent review by a former solicitor-general.

Police on June 15, 2017 bugged a meeting room at Risdon Prison north of Hobart as part of their probe into Neill-Fraser's former lawyer Jeffrey Ian Thompson.
