Authorities are racing to take advantage of favourable wind conditions to contain a fast-moving island fire that's forced the evacuation of campers who flocked to the idyllic spot for the long weekend.
The out-of-control blaze on Queensland's Moreton Island broke out in dense national park land near Eastern Beach at 10.30am on Saturday, burning through about 640 hectares of scrub and forcing the evacuation of 20 campers to the western side of the island.
