My friend and former colleague, Jo Cambridge, who has died aged 73 of acute myeloid leukaemia, challenged the prevailing thinking about rheumatoid arthritis; her research led to immunotherapies that have improved the lives of countless individuals globally.

Born in Perth, Australia, to Judith (nee Campbell), a homemaker, and Geoffrey Cambridge, a stockbroker, she excelled at her studies. After Presbyterian Ladies college in Perth, Jo went to the University of Western Australia, graduating with a BSc in 1974.
