Midfielder Clare Wheeler claims the Matildas risk falling further behind on the global stage if Australia does not follow the trends of Europe and North America and introduce a fully-professional women's competition.

There are 30 days to go until the Women's Asian Cup kicks off in Perth on March 1 when Australia face the Philippines at Optus Stadium but Wheeler is concerned about what happens beyond the 12-team tournament and into the future.
