More than 200 firefighters have worked to stop a monster bushfire in South Australia from spreading. (PR IMAGE PHOTO)

More homes have been saved than destroyed after firefighters helped temper a "monster" blaze that scorched hundreds of hectares.

The fierce bushfire burning east of Mount Compass in the Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide, broke out about 4.30pm on Sunday.
