A young girl remains in critical condition after a car ploughed into a crowd of NRL fans waving off the Newcastle Knights team bus ahead of the grand final.

Fans largely made up of families and children were lined up on Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout about 9.30am on Saturday in NSW's Hunter region when the tragedy unfolded.
