New Orleans forward Herbert Jones emphasizes the importance of keeping offensive players in front of you as a key aspect of elite defense. Despite the perception of a lack of defense in the NBA this season, there has been a noticeable shift post-All-Star break with teams averaging fewer points per game. This change could be attributed to fewer fouls being called and a decrease in free throw attempts, leading to a more defensive-minded approach.
Coaches and players offer various explanations for this defensive resurgence, including improved discipline, heightened urgency, and a better understanding of opponents' tactics. Fundamentals play a crucial role in effective defense, with players like Jones focusing on footwork and positioning to thwart offensive threats.
