A new blood test that could determine whether a driver who causes a car crash was impaired due to a lack of sleep could be available soon, it has been reported. According to the Guardian, it could pave the way for legislation against tired drivers or their employers.
Research that has been funded by the Australian Government Office of Road Safety could be the catalyst for laws that would see people prosecuted for driving while fatigued.
The report in the Guardian quoted Prof Steven Lockley, a sleep expert at Harvard medical school, who advises Nasa on sleep safety, as saying: “There has to be a system to check whether someone has had enough sleep, because they could be putting other people’s lives at risk."
