An overheating vehicle can turn an ordinary drive into a roadside headache in a hurry, especially when the temperature gauge starts climbing and the hood begins sending up steam. The good news is that some overheating problems come from simple issues that a careful vehicle owner can inspect and address without immediately reaching for a toolbox the size of a small suitcase.
That does not mean an overheating engine deserves a casual attitude, though. Continued driving with an overheating engine can cause serious damage, so the first DIY fix always starts with knowing when to stop, let everything cool completely, and avoid opening a hot cooling system.
