The Prime Minister has stood by his controversial captains pick, after she back-pedalled an apology for labelling trans people as "surgically mutilated".

Scott Morrison on Tuesday defended Warringah candidate Katherine Deves, who made new comments claiming the medical community refer to gender reassignment surgery as body mutilation and sterilisation.
