Labor swept to power on the promise of more open government after Anthony Albanese lashed predecessor Scott Morrison for snubbing Australians with excessive secrecy.

Yet since May 2025, the prime minister has shut down a push for broader transparency championed by former attorney-general Mark Dreyfus, say multiple sources including some within the party.
