An abandoned house on a quiet street with thick bush and towering trees is being scoured by police in the hunt for an elderly grandfather snatched in a botched abduction.

Police say "hope is fading" for 85-year-old Chris Baghsarian, who was taken captive a week ago when three men stormed his Sydney home and bundled him into an SUV.
